People cross paths at different moments along the arc of your lived experience. The beautiful energy of Shantell Martin blew into my universe this past spring. Shantell and I met through dance – I thank Boston Ballet for this introduction. Shantell celebrated the World Premiere of “Kites,” her first ballet and experience with choreography, as part of Boston Ballet’s #ChoreograpHER Series.
If you are at all familiar with Shantell’s work it is essentially visual movement. Her lyrical lines and spirited twists and turns can make you smile or feel tension – it’s all in there, in those simple yet complex linear moves. This leap from the page to the stage felt like a natural place for her to explore – bringing the physicality of her drawing into lyrical movement where musicality, the human form and a playful richness of the performance, the stage set and costuming meld into an alternate “Shatell” universe.

SHANTELL IN THE WORK
Collaborations are a large part of where Shantell’s work has evolved. An exciting explosion of interdisciplinary collabs takes her lyrical work from fashion to environment, nft’s to social change, making lines in the snow and in the sky, Shantell allows her own curiosity to take her into a variety of mediums where she forges new creative relationships and produces work that keeps her curious and growing.
She designed this ceramic pitcher in support of Amref Health Africa’s work to to help to bring clean water to remote communities on the African Continent.
